The job of a commercial pilot comes up with a lot of responsibilities. A pilot’s duty is not just to fly planes or travel to different countries. In fact, it is much more than that. A pilot has to ensure the safety of hundreds of passengers and the crew on-board. However, these responsibilities also come with great results. Now that you know how exciting is the job of a pilot is, the main question that arises is how to become a pilot. Before we answer that question let us know what a commercial pilot is. Well, a Commercial Pilot is a pilot who flies a specific aircraft type for an airline and holds a commercial pilot certificate license issued by an authority called Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
How to become a pilot?
- Complete Senior-Secondary level education
To become a pilot, one must have completed senior secondary education from science stream with Maths, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects. The overall percentage should be more than 60%.
- Get a Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
It takes 200 hours to get a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) in India. One must be enrolled in a flying school approved by DGCA.
- Clear Medical Exams
All the DGCA medical exams must be cleared.
- Get Ratings
One needs a multi/single-engine rating as well as an instrument rating which is provided by the flying school after successful completion of CPL.
- Get Type Ratings
A type rating is a course in which you will be trained on a specific aircraft like an AIRBUS A320, B737, Atr, etc. After type rating, you apply for a job for the aircraft you have type rated on. If you get hired then the airlines will send you for your airline training which will cost you around 10 lakhs.
How much does it cost to become a pilot in India?
Aviation courses are mostly expensive. One has to loosen his pocket to get this prestigious job. There are multiple certifications and ratings involved which can cost a fortune for many. For instance, to get a CPL, one has to complete 200 hours of flying. Flying for 1-hour costs around INR 12,000. So, the total cost for flying 200 hours would be between 25-40 lakhs. The multi/single-engine rating costs around INR 5 lakhs. So the total cost of CPL with multi-engine and instrument rating is 30-45 lakhs in a flying school in India. The flying school also charges a fee of its own and the above number can vary according to that. A type rating costs between 15-30 Lakhs.
Apart from this, there are other expenses as well. Therefore, it takes around 80 Lakhs – 1 Crore to become a commercial pilot in India.
